THE TRAGIC LOSS ANDTIMELESS REBIRTH
Built in 1843, Academic Hall was the University of Missouri’s first building, symbolizing its ambition as a leader in higher education since its founding in 1839. With its grand design, it served as the intellectual heart of the campus. In 1892, a devastating fire destroyed much of the hall, leaving only the majestic front columns standing. Despite the loss, the columns endured as a powerful reminder of the university’s spirit.
From the ashes of Academic Hall, the Mizzou Columns emerged as both a memorial to the past and a symbol of resilience. Over the years, they have come to represent the university’s strength, commitment to progress, and its ability to overcome challenges, standing as a lasting tribute to Mizzou’s enduring spirit.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE
The Mizzou Columns are a prime example of neoclassical design, reflecting the university’s early ambition for grandeur. This architectural style traces its roots back to the classical traditions of Ancient Greece and Rome. Their timeless elegance continues to make them a symbol of Mizzou’s architectural history and the only surviving remnant of Academic Hall. Over the years, these columns have come to represent the university’s resilience and lasting vision.
